Good Tips:

Do you like Hiking? In Rio you will find amazing hiking trails with an incredible views. See the following article for details: Click here

Transportation?  Uber and Cab (as we call Taxi) services works fine in Rio. See the most popular Taxi companies: Aerocoop, Transcoopass and Coopertramo.

Cellphone Services? In Brazil is very popular to have Free-Wifi (ask for the password) in every business establishments like bars, coffee shops, restaurants, sometimes even on the beach. Brazilians use a lot the Whatsapp app, so feel free to call or text using it. To add a brazilian phone number on your smartphone, you will have to type +1 55 21 XXXXX XXXX. Brazilian phone numbers have 9 digits.

Other options:

  1. If you have an unlocked phone, you can buy a Prepay SIM Card chip and just switch your current american one.
  2. Buy an inexpensive unlocked cell phone here in US (www.amazon.com) and just buy the Prepay SIM Card chip in Rio.
  3. Contact your current carrier and ask them about their international rates and plans.

Need Money? The Brazilian currency is called Real (RAY-AL) or the plural Reais (RAY-EYES). The latest convertion rate is 1 USD = 3.25 BRL [11/21/2017].

Places to exchange: In Houston, any Travelex store (1 USD = 2.9315 BRL) or online. In Rio, I would recommend inside the airport at one of their kioskes. If you pretend to take dollars to Brazil, make sure you have only brand new $100 bills, some places in Rio don't accept old bills (I don't know why).

Tip: It's usually safe to use your current credit card in Rio (I do all the time), but I would recommend you check with your credit card provider the exchange rates and if they have international fees.
